Berlin {part 1}

Tim's long weekend and Benjamin's autumn vacation lined up perfectly this semester, so we left Wednesday morning for Berlin (about a 6 hour train ride from Heidelberg). We stayed until Saturday afternoon, and really enjoyed it!

On Wednesday we checked into our hotel and then went to see the Brandenburg Gate.

Right next to the gate is where the US Embassy is located.

We had reservations to go to the dome of the Reichstag, which is where the German parliament meets.

View from the dome over Berlin.

In the center of the dome is this column of mirrors whose angle can be changed to direct sunlight into the parliament room below.

On Thursday morning we did something for the kids, which was to visit the Legoland Discovery Center, complete with a mini-Berlin.

The mini-Berliners would push down the wall every few minutes.

There was also a Star Wars section.

That afternoon, we visited The Story of Berlin Museum, which was fantastic.

It has a Cold War-era bunker beneath it.

Ludwigsburg Pumpkin Festival

We joined some of our students and traveled about an hour to the world's largest pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg. It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm, and the pumpkins were beautiful! There is a themed display each year, and this year was Olympics themed. The festival was held in the gardens of the Ludwigsburg palace. It was a great way to spend the day!

The Heidelberg Zoo

Yesterday was beautiful and we decided to take the kids to the zoo here in Heidelberg. It was a great size for two little kids to run around and see animals as well as play in the numerous play areas.
